The Technopole Brest Iroise

As a pole of excellence in the community, the Technopôle is situated on the coast of Plouzané, along the shoreline and bordering Brest.

The primary objective of the Technopôle Brest-Iroise is to privilege innovation and job creation by concentrating on the same site engineering schools, research and development and high tech centres. It was this desire which led the local players who were at the origin of the project, to develop local employment around themes such as the sea, living sciences and new information and communication technologies.

Created in 1988, the site spreads out over 100 hectares.

Over 6000 people work there, 900 tutor-researchers and 700 administrative personnel participate in bringing in 2000 students from over 50 different countries, making this site an exceptional exchange of cultures.

An ambition

The Technopôle Brest-Iroise is a non profit association and federates a network of 200 establishments from the world's business, research, further education and local communities. They all share the same ambition: « Development and promotion of innovation in the territory ».

Three missions

1- Federation, so as to develop and reinforce skill centres and make all the players from both business and research work together.

2- Undertake, build and evaluate projects; accommodate and accompany new enterprises.

3- Lead, build bridges and promote the skills that are present in the territory, give value to the scientific and technological assets through communication tools.

Yesterday...

1991-93: Deployment of the principal infrastructures and structuring equipment: ENIB, ISAMOR, Phares & Balises (currently CETMEF), Thomson, Business village, University lodgings...

1995-98: Set-up of the Pôle Analytique des Eaux (currently IDHESA).

2000-2009: Expansion of the site with the Information and Communication village, most notably setting up the ClimSAT platform that depends on a United Nations Program for Development (PNUD).

... And today

Over a hundred companies are now installed there: major groups such as Thalès, internationally recognised enterprises such as Cabasse, dozens of small-to-medium businesses and industries but also many start-ups (either in the process of being created, or just starting out).

The Technopôle is equally a place where the flagships research and higher education are established. For the studies of the sea, Ifremer, the Paul Emile Victor Institute (IPEV) and the European University Institute for the Sea (IUEM) are essential research or training centres. Internally recognised further education establishments are also based here.

Finally, the site disposes of 2 business hotels, several restaurants and spaces that can be transformed into workshops, laboratories or offices in order to facilitate enterprise creation.

The President is M. Marc Labbey and the director is M. Michel Morvan.

The Technopôle Brest-Iroise benefits from constant support from Europe, the French state, the Region, the Department and Brest Métropole Océane.

Its extension continues with projects such as a digital campus or the extension of the University.
